The Walt Disney Company has unveiled its 2012-13 US programming slate ahead of its Upfronts presentation today in New York.
Disney, which has made significant ground in the US ratings war with Nickelodeon this year, last month tying for first place for kids 2-11, will debut a number of new shows for Disney Channel, boys-skewed Disney XD and soon-to-launch Disney Junior
Among new shows for Disney Channel, which claims to be within 1% audience share of Nick for the first quarter of this year, is in-house comedy toon Wander Over Yonder, which follows an over-enthusiastic space traveller who tries to help wherever he goes and comes from Emmy-winning producer Craig McCracken.
Live-action telemovie Teen Beach Musical follows a group of all-singing, all-dancing rival groups of bikers and surfers. Rainforest Productions is attached to produce, with David Buelow executive producing.
Girl Vs Monster (wt) is another telemovie and stars Olivia Holt (Kickin’ It) as a girl who discovers she is a fifth-generation monster. Sheri Singer executive produces.
Other new shows include unscripted prank series Code 9, from Evolution Media; Disney Channel Original Movie Let It Shine; dance event show Shake It Up: Made in Japan; and animated comedy Gravity Falls. Reality talent competition Make Your Mark, Good Luck Charlie (season three) and Phineas and Ferb also return.
Further details also emerged on new cable net Disney Junior’s debut year as a full channel. The channel launches in the US on March 23, replacing SoapNet.
Its programming will include Brown Bag Films-produced toons Doc McStuffins, which promotes good health, and The Happy Hugglemonsters, based on books from author Niamh Sharkey; animated telemovie Sofia the First; musical short-form series Quiet Is…; and special episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Jake and the Never Land Pirates.
